Why is gratitude so important?

Gratitude is one of the best tools to creating a happy life. The more grateful we are, the more we can see the beauty all around us. Many people think of “gratitude journals” or giving thanks at thanksgiving as enough. But this is actually a practice we need to cultivate daily. It is so easy too! It requires no equipment or fancy meditation. Just you and your thoughts to remind yourself of all the things we have to be grateful for.

Even the lessons we receive in life are reasons enough to be thankful. For example, I have had to learn many financial lessons I wasn’t expecting in the past three months. I am so grateful because I learned how to deal with finances better. It was not easy but was so helpful to my personal and financial growth.

Why is a simple daily gratitude practice so important? Studies have shown some of the following effects include:

  1. Giving thanks cultivates better relationships.

  2. Managers who gave more thanks to their employees, showed that those employees worked harder. 

  3. A large increase in happiness after only 1 week of giving thanks.

  4. Increase in optimism and positive outlook in life.

I certainly can say that my own life has been greatly impacted by waking up and giving thanks for three things each morning. As I open my eyes, I put my hands on my heart and I think of 3 things I am grateful for. Sometimes its people, things, experiences, money, etc. It can be small, and it can be massive.
