Holiday Series: 4 Tips for Setting Boundaries During the Holidays
I know that for many the holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy our families! But with that fun also comes boundaries that are being crossed. Are you done putting up with the BS of the holidays? If yes, this is for you. Here are my top ways for you to set boundaries this holiday season:
Set your boundaries ahead of time! Don’t wait until the last minute to set the boundary, do it now! For example, I don’t eat desserts so if I was going to someone’s house, I would let them know today so that they know to expect me to say “no.” This makes the host feel comfortable that they can accommodate you.
Release guilt instead of giving in! Although many people will try to push your boundaries, it's important you focus on releasing guilt during the holiday season. Spend a few moments really feeling and releasing the guilt every morning or evening. Please be aware that guilt is YOUR PROBLEM. It's really important you take responsibility for that feeling so that you can release it.
Create a policy for dealing with negative influences. If there is something in particular you are worried about, make sure to have a policy written out about how you are going to handle it. Take a bit of time to brainstorm solutions now and write it down. Then when someone tries to influence you negatively, you can refer to your policy and just follow it. This will ensure that you don’t have to think, you can just react by following your policy.
Make a boundary buddy. Get someone on your side to help you set a particular boundary. This can make it more fun and less stressful especially if you know you are not alone. For example, if you ensure with your partner that you want a certain boundary set with his mother then he can help you by answering for you. This will reduce your stress.
I know that it can be difficult to set boundaries but keep in mind that you will feel better when you do! Also, the more you do it, the easier it will get for you! Need help with over indulging this holiday season? Check out this blog post to help!
